The Department of Architecture is one of the creative Departments of this Institute that aims at educating the coming generations of the art and science of making buildings. The Department of Architecture was incepted in the year 1984 as a part of the then Government Engineering College Raipur, with a modest intake of 20. It was established in the year 1984.The current intake for the B.Arch program is 71.

With growing industrialization and increasing demand for professionals in the field of architecture, the Department has been successfully delivering the need for those professionals. The endeavor of this department is produce architects who would be able to consciously design spaces and built forms that would not only solve the problems of built environments today but also would shape it for the future generations.

Architecture Library : The library of the Department houses a variety of books, journals and magazines related to Architecture and topics associated with it to keep the students updated with the world of architecture. It also has a good amount of archives of the students works done so far.

Survey Laboratory: The laboratory has all the equipment to give the practical exposure of field survey and levelling to the students. This helps the students to gain knowledge of fieldwork, layout of buildings and preparation of measured drawings.

Environmental Laboratory: With the help of instruments and equipment available in this laboratory, the students get a chance to practically use them, conduct experiments and come to conclusions regarding various climatic data. As compared to using standardised data, they can actually study the method of deriving them.

Model Making Workshop Students are encouraged to make scaled models of their projects, using various materials like wood, Plaster of Paris, acrylic sheets, etc., which help them in understanding the structural and aesthetic values of their designs.

Building Material Laboratory:The building material laboratory houses a vast collection of material samples and models that help the students to understand identify and experience the properties of the materials, their applications and fixing details through practical, hands-on, experience.

Computer Laboratory:The computer laboratory, equipped with broadband internet facility in the Department introduces the students to the modern methods of developing models and drawings, with the help of modern software such as AutoCad , 3D Max , Revitt etc.

Exhibition: There is a permanent Exhibition space in the Department where students works are exhibited. The works showcased primarily consist of B. Arch. thesis works, NASA & ZONASA works and exemplary works of students. This acts like a source of inspiration to the students in pursuit of their creative endeavour.

National Institute of Technology Raipur (NIT Raipur or NITRR) is a public technical and research university located in Raipur, India. Founded in 1956 with two engineering disciplines, Mining and metallurgy, the university focuses exclusively on science, technology, engineering, and architecture.It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance and funded by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.and is one of the oldest institutions of the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) system.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Ar.Dr.Debashis Sanyal who is presently associate professor & Head of department of Architecture at NIT.Since 1985 he is teaching various architectural subjects.His active research area of interest are self sufficient housing,development of eco-cities/smart cities.He was awarded justice mahapatra award for research by rotary club of Raipur central in 1995 and many more prestigious awards.
